木材、石材、鉄鉱、兵糧などの資源への課金はできず、資源、兵士、時間を早めるためのアイテムは販売されない。プレイヤーは武将の戦力値だけで相手に勝つことはできない。それによりこの戦いの舞台がいかに公平であるかが体現されている。

【リアルな地形】
中国の古代地図に基づき、リアルな三国志の戦場を再現。
「三國志 真戦」では、山脈を乗り越えることはできず、関所を占領しなければならない。河を渡る時も同様で、埠頭に行かなければ兵士を移動させることができない。それゆえ、要衝である埠頭をしっかりと守り抜けば、数万の敵軍を封じ込めることができる。
同時に柵や櫓といった建築物に対しても戦略的知識が必要とされる。状況に応じた防御線を設置できるかどうかも、プレイヤーにとって大きな試練となる。地形に応じた戦略や、内通者を利用した戦略性なども実装されている。
【敵との遭遇で戦闘開始】
本作では、同じマスで敵と遭遇するとすぐに戦闘が開始される。
プレイヤーは、敵の行軍路線を予測することで防御ラインを敷き、敵の動きに影響を及ぼすことができる。さらに、独特な「士気」は行軍距離が関連しており、行軍距離が長いほど、「士気」は低くなり、部隊の戦闘力にも影響する。「士気」と「敵と遭遇したら戦闘が開始される」というルールを活かし、戦をリードすることにより相手をせん滅する爽快感を味わうことができる。
【多種多彩な編制】
本作では、兵種の相関関係がはっきりとしており、槍兵、騎兵、盾兵、弓兵の間で四すくみの関係を持っている。また、強力な“兵器”もあり、城を攻め落とす際には活躍するが、全ての兵種に対して不利となる。プレイヤーは兵種を有効活用することで、自分の勢力を拡大できる。
さらに三国志の歴史を尊重した武将の設定、武将が持つ兵種の能力もしっかりと再現されている。プレイヤーは適した武将と兵のタイプを選択し、最適解を探していく。
