Abdul Rashid bin Ali bin Abdul Rahman Sufi, born in 1964, is a Qur’an reciter who holds a high degree in the ten recitations and a former mufti in Somalia. He holds both Somali and Qatari nationalities.

Biography

He was born in Somalia and settled in Qatar in 1991. Many scholars graduated under him, and he established many schools and centers for learning and teaching the Qur’an, the last of which is his famous mosque in Mogadishu called the Sheikh Ali Sufi Mosque. He now works as an imam at Anas bin Malik Mosque in the Qatari capital, Doha. He also participates as an accredited judge in Qur’an recitation competitions, including his participation in judging the Crowns of Light competition, which is held annually by the Qatari Jeem TV.

His study

He completed memorizing the Qur’an when he was ten years old, then he mastered the science of Tajweed at the hands of his father, the Sheikh, with the narration of Hafs on the authority of Asim, and after that the seven recitations through Al-Shatibiyyah. He listened to Al-Shatibiyyah’s explanation from his father more than three times and memorized it.

His trip to Egypt to seek knowledge

He traveled to Egypt to complete the study of Qira’at in October 1981 AD, and there he joined the Qira’at Institute, and obtained a high certificate in the ten Qira’at from this institute.

Sheikh Muhammad bin Ismail Al-Hamdhani gave it two approvals, with his chain of transmission going back to the Noble Prophet, may God bless him and grant him peace. The first: in the ten recitations from the path of Al-Shatibiyyah and Al-Durrah, and the second: in the ten recitations from the path of Al-Tayyiba.

His travel to Qatar

He came to Qatar in 1991 AD, where he worked since his arrival at the Ministry of Endowments and Islamic Affairs - as an imam and preacher at the Anas bin Malik Mosque in the Central Market area in Doha.

He now holds Qatari citizenship.

Sheikh Abdul Rashid Sufi is the most famous reciter in Somalia.
